  • The iPad is still in its infancy, so there are certain limitations that I am certain will eventually be resolved:
    • First and foremost, EagleFiler is not available as an iPad (although I hear the developer has ideas for one). This somewhat limits iPad access to the data through another application such as AirSharing or iDisk. Also, it is not recommended that documents are moved, renamed, created (unless its in the "To Import" folder), or deleted outside of EagleFiler. You can modify, as long as it is saved in the same location with the same name.
    • The iDisk application hasn't been updated for iPad
    • File Sharing (and allowing one application to open another document) isn't always ubiquitous, and usually is one way. For example, you can open a document from AirSharing into Pages, edit in Pages, but Pages cannot send it back to AirSharing
    • Because the transfer is one way, and there is no EagleFiler native iPad app, and you can't add files to the EagleFiler library (except for the "To Import" folder), note taking on the iPad isn't as hassle free as it should be. You can however create a document and move it to the "To Import" folder, however it is kind of clumsy.
  • Scanning
    • Documents that have been stapled together tend to be more difficult to scan because sometimes two pages stick together as they go through the scanner
    • When scanning a stack of documents, they will initially be all placed into the same PDF file. So you have to scan in groups of documents that will become single files. This is probably a bigger issue when getting started and going back and scanning in old archived documents, as opposed to day-to-day workflow.
  • Access to Data
    • Connectivity Costs: if you are paying for an internet connection at home, an iPhone data plan (or perhaps more than one), and (potentially) an iPad data plan, the costs can really add up. For example, a home Internet connection ($40), two iPhone data plans ($60), and an iPad plan ($30) would be $130/month in Internet connectivity fees.
    • Data Storage Costs: If you need more than 2 GB of data storage in the cloud, it is going to cost you around $100/year.
    • WiFi everywhere is not really everywhere. Usually not while in transit. How many times have you been in a hotel where the WiFi in your room didn't work? How many conferences and meetings have you been at where there was no WiFi?
    • The iPad will only locally cache documents that have been viewed on the iPad at least once. Automatically downloading updated documents is not transparent.
