iPad Apps - Document Managers/Viewers

Personal Productivity Strategies > iPad > iPad Apps — Document Managers/Viewers


Document managers priovide for a mechanism of importing and exporting documents onto the iPad and then being able to view them. So far, I have been concentrating on a couple of apps:

Application Basics Strengths Weakneses
GoodReader • Can connect to any file service
• Can act as a WebDAV server		 • Mainly optimized for Reading
• Displays PDF documents into an eBook-like page-by-page reading experience (Most PDF readers present the PDF in a scrolling format, like reading a PDF in a browser)
• Handles large PDFs very well
• "Open in xxx application" feature
• Search
• Bookmarking		 • cannot download a folder in one step: you have to open the folder, and then individually transfer each file. That file is then dumped into the main file list, where then you have to move each of them (although you can do this as a group) into a folder that you want to organize into. [It should be noted, that if you mount the application using its built-in server, you can drag and drop files using the Finder. But your iPad and Computer have to be on the same WiFi network to be able to use that feature]

Air Sharing HD • Can connect to any file service

• No "Open in xxx application" feature yet

Updates:
GoodReader has added significant new features:
  • PDF Markup: You can now add lines, text, notes, and highlight your PDF documents.
  • Folder sync: You can now sync multiple folders to a cloud-based storage system. Note that you can chose where in GoodReader to store the folder. I prefer that the folder always maintains the folder path like PDF Expert.
ReaddleDocs offers great document management capabilities:
  • You can download an entire folder at once. It maintains the entire folder path and hierarchy from the original server.
  • You can sync a folder from a cloud-based system. It maintains the entire folder path and hierarchy from the original server.
  • PDF Markup: You can add lines, text, notes, and highlight your PDF documents.
PDFExpert is my personal choice. This application is also by Readdle. the differences between the two are hard to tell.
