Automation Software:
Automation is important so that your backup is consistently done, and not an after thought that is forgotten. Also your time is better spent doing other things. When considering a solution, consider that you want a system that can schedule your backups according to your needs. It should be able to e-mail you the status of the backup. It should be able to stop and start databases and other services so that "open" files can be closed before backing up. The software should be able to manage the use of drives, disks, and tape libraries. Consider system that can support simultaneous streams of data, so if you have multiple data sources, more than one of them can be backed up at once. This will also help reduce your backup window.
